New England Living TV: Season 1, Episode 3, York, ME

We lucked out with several picture-perfect fall days when we filmed the York, ME episode of New England Living TV. The historic home featured in this episode had undergone an extensive renovation prior to its current owners, Kara and Mike, purchasing it two years ago. The top-to-bottom remodel opened up what had been a series of small, cramped rooms and introduced modern touches which complement, rather than compete with, the historic elements still found throughout the home.

Set on the banks of the York River, Kara and Mike’s home is a beguiling blend of formal and casual, and old and new. Contemporary art is displayed alongside vintage family portraits; rustic touches are paired with formal pieces; and children’s toys are tucked into corners here and there throughout the open floor plan main living area which runs along the back, river-facing side of the home.

The centerpiece of the kitchen is a massive island topped with a four-inch thick butcher-block wood counter where Host Parker Kelley and Justin Walker, chef/owner of Earth at Hidden Pond, prepare dinner for a group of Kara and Mike’s friends as the episode nears its finish.

Prior to the evening’s soiree, Parker and Kara spend time tooling around the York River in the couple’s lobster boat. Parker also heads up to Earth at Hidden Pond, Kara and Mike’s favorite restaurant which is located in Kennebunkport, to help Justin harvest produce from the restaurant’s onsite garden that he’ll use to prepare dinner that evening. It is an evening that – quite literally – includes wine and song. Kara is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter who mentors young singers in the area, one of whom performs a song for the couple and their guests.
