Christmas Wishes

We all know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen – but this holiday season, a less familiar reindeer is making her way into the hearts and homes of local children. Her name is Nova, and she is the main character of Nova’s Wish, a self-published children’s book from Marion, Massachusetts, resident Deborah Thompson and illustrated by Courtney Sarro.

Thompson grew up in Marion and, after teaching at a Seaside School, went on to run a private preschool and after-school program out of her home. Part of her inspiration for her book was to empower children and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.

For a long time, Thompson had the idea for a story she wanted to write: a reindeer that lives at the North Pole but longs for a home of her very own.  Santa “grants her wish” and selects each reader as Nova’s new family member to care for her all year long.

Nova’s Wish, which comes as a complete set with a book, bag, and plush reindeer toy, was recently launched at Uncle Jon’s Coffee in Marion. Several area businesses are selling Nova’s Wish and hosting pop-up and book signing events. “Each and every book I sell, it’s my wish – as well as Nova’s – coming true,” she says.  When asked about the community’s response to her book, Thompson said it felt magical.  “I’m so humbled.”

The success of the book has been bittersweet because Thompson’s mother, who always encouraged her and was instrumental in the editing process, passed away in July. “I’m both happy and sad,” says Thompson, “but I feel she is still playing an integral part in Nova’s Wish. “

Nova’s Wish is sold online at novathebabyreindeer.com and at the following Massachusetts retailers:
